Top 5 SAT Test Prep Tips for Parents

Updated: Apr 10

The Year 6 SATs are coming up fast – and as a parent, you want to support your child without adding pressure. Here are five tried-and-tested SAT test prep tips to help your child prepare for SATs in a calm, positive way.

Sat test prep tips

SAT Test Prep Tip 1 :Build Little Routines

Regular short bursts of practice are far better than long, stressful sessions. Aim for 15–20 minutes a few times a week – especially for maths and reading.

If possible, make sure your child has a dedicated, quiet place where they can study. This can be difficult, particularly with siblings around.

Tip 2: Make it Fun

Turn revision into a game.

  • Spelling word bingo

  • Times tables races

  • Grammar scavenger hunts in books.

  • Playing board games e.g. Scrabble and Monopoly can really help with both maths and literacy

Even SATs prep can feel more like play than work!

Tip 3: Focus on Confidence, Not Just Content

Some children can do the work but doubt themselves. Remind them of what they’ve already achieved and try to avoid focusing only on scores or mock test results. Confidence is key when it comes to SAT tests, and learning in general! Praise and reward when you can. Once exam week is over maybe have a plan in place for a fun event or activity with your child that they can be looking forward to.

Tip 4: Read Often – and Widely

Reading regularly helps with SATs reading and SPaG. Encourage books, magazines, comics, instructions, menus – anything! Afterwards, ask a few gentle questions:

“What do you think will happen next?”

“Why do you think that character did that?”

Tip 5: Ask for Help if Needed

If your child is finding things tricky, don’t wait until the last minute. A tutor can help with targeted support to fill gaps and boost confidence before May.
