Updated: May 24

If your child is considering a selective school, private school or grammar school, chances are you’ve heard about the 11 plus exam (11+). It’s a big step – but with the right support and realistic preparation, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

Here’s what you need to know about 11 Plus exam preparation:

11 Plus exam preparation

What is the 11 Plus exam?

The 11 Plus (11+) is an entrance exam for some secondary schools, testing skills like verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English, and maths. It’s usually taken in Year 6 – but many children start preparing in Year 4 or 5.

When should we start preparing for the 11 Plus?

While every child is different, a gentle introduction from Year 4 or 5 allows time to build confidence gradually. Cramming in the final months before an entrance exam can create stress.

How can I help my child prepare?

  • Focus on core skills in reading, comprehension, spelling, and maths

  • Introduce puzzles, logic games, and vocabulary-building activities

  • Encourage independent reading and discussion

  • Work with a tutor familiar with the local 11+ format

The role of a tutor in 11+ preparation

The majority of parents find a tutor to help with the preparation.

Why? Because a tutor can make a big difference – offering tailored strategies, boosting confidence, and helping children feel prepared and calm on the day. Many parents find their children focus better when under the guidance of a tutor and it can relieve a lot of stress.
