How to Support Your Child’s Learning at Home – A Parent’s Guide

Whether your child is in Year 1 or Year 6, learning doesn’t end when the school bell rings. Parents play a vital role in helping children thrive – not through pressure or extra homework, but by nurturing a supportive and curious environment at home. Here’s how you can help your child build strong foundations and a love of learning. How to support your child's learning at home!

5 Steps to support your child's learning at home:

Step 1. Establish a calm routine

A consistent routine helps children feel secure and reduces homework stress. Try to set aside regular time for reading, discussions, or simple educational games. For example use resources from BBC Bitesize.

Step 2. Read together – at any age

This can include you reading to your child or sharing a book. Many children enjoy being read to right into Secondary school - particularly a book which they would otherwise be unable to read themselves. Even older children benefit from shared reading time. Ask them questions, encourage predictions, and chat about new vocabulary.

Step 3. Make learning part of everyday life

Baking is maths. Shopping is budgeting. A walk in the park is science. Show your child that learning is everywhere – not just in the classroom.

Step 4. Praise effort, not just results

Children are more likely to take risks and grow if they know it’s OK to make mistakes. Celebrate perseverance and progress.

Step 5. Consider extra support if needed

Every child learns differently. If your child is falling behind or lacking confidence, a tutor can provide personalised attention and reassurance.

Tutoring can be a great way to:

  • Build confidence in key skills

  • Support learning gaps

  • Develop a calm, positive approach to schoolwork
